Star Wars Final Reveal

✍🏻 Writer’s Quotes to Live By

“We don't outline, so we don't have prospective tasks to divide up. It's just, we start at the beginning and talk the first scene through, write it up, proceed to the next.”

— Ethan Coen

  • Good Morning Writers,

In case you were under a rock and didn’t watch Monday Night Football (myself included), it contained the epic premiere of the Final Trailer for ‘Star Wars: Rise of the Skywalker’. The trailer was filled with tons of epic images for the fans that will surely be dissected into greater detail on Youtube:

  • The final film in the Skywalker saga, “The Rise of Skywalker” is about a “new generation, what they’ve inherited, the light and the dark,” said director J.J. Abrams. Rise premieres in theaters this Christmas.

✍️ Jesus Rocks & Rolls

John Turturro’s long-awaited reprisal of the scene-stealing ‘Jesus’ from “The Big Lebowski” is here. With “The Jesus Rolls” set to premiere at the Rome Film Festival this month. US AMERICAN’s will have to wait until 2020 before we can actually lay eyes upon the product. The official synopsis is as follows:

“The Jesus Rolls” finds Turturro reprising the role of Jesus Quintana, who after shortly being released from prison, links up with two fellow misfits played by Bobby Cannavale and Audrey Tautou. The three characters make an enemy out of a gun-toting hairdresser (played by Jon Hamm) and must find a away to escape the law and society.

It’s been a long and uphill battle for this film to come to fruition with Turturro stating that the easiest part of the whole ride was getting the rights from the Coen Brothers to even create the film.

“I showed it to Joel and Ethan, and they said, ‘Yeah, this is the right [way to go]. Just like when we did ‘The Big Lebowski,’ it needs to be its own thing,’” Turturro said of getting the Coen brothers’ permission to move forward on “The Jesus Rolls.

✍🏿 20-30 Years Younger in 20-30 Seconds

De-Aginging is the new craze in old Hollywood these days, everyone from Will Smith (Gemini Man), Al Pacino, Robert De Niro & Joe Pesci (Netflix's upcoming The Irishman), and John Goodman are doing it. All you need to join in on the fad is a multi-million dollar visual F/X team to shoot your face in high res imagery and then take literal DECADES off your face.

Now, there’s an AI software for it called "Shapeshifter" and it offers another approach to de-aging. Their latest work was showcased in The Righteous Gemstones where a younger John Goodman was onscreen for 30 minutes due to Shapeshifter’s restructuring process.

You’ve got to think this is only the beginning on the stretches of how this tech will be used in the coming years. It’s making its way into premium cable television, so don’t be surprised when we get a Doogie Howser MD series starring TODAY’S Neil Patrick Harris… at 14 yrs old, again!

The result, according to VFX supervisor Olcun Tan, is a sort of hybrid image with the VFX applied to the footage of the actor's performance. "Our technology allows you to take the existing performance; while not throwing away the face. It's not a full reconstruction."

We’ll see how things progress, but don’t be surprised in the era of reboots, remakes, rehashes when an old property that’s filled with nostalgia, gets an unnecessary reboot just to use this new de-aging technology.

✍🏾Netflix Swallows Another 2 Billion Debt Pill

On yesterday, Netflix announced that it was taking down an additional $2 billion in debt to give them the edge over the entertainment behemoth, and analysts say it is a wise investment.

This comes at a time that so many competitors; Disney, Apply, WarnerMedia, NBCUniversal etc. are launching their own services. Netflix has to line the vault with content with a projected budget of 15 billion going towards media.

  • The idea for buzz has been spending small on TV projects like the Tik-Tok viral movie “Tall Girl”. Spend BIG on “The Crown'“ and win prestigious awards and industry credibility.

We’ll see if this concept can be kept up with for ages, but this seems a little unsustainable. My prediction for Netflix is that they’re going to make money through television syndication of their movies and television properties. Their vault of content is surely enough to air on broadcast networks.

✍🏼 Marvel Movies Suck

Issa Rae Being a Boss

✍🏻 Writer’s Quotes to Live By

“Great men are not born great, they grow great . . .” The Godfather

— Mario Puzo

  • Good Morning Writers. We hope you cranked out a fresh draft this weekend!!!

Box office update weekend of October 18th-20th, 2019:

    • 1. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil $36,000,000

    • 2. Joker (2019) $29,205,000

    • 3. Zombieland 2: Double Tap $26,725,000

✍🏿 Scorsese and Coppola Agree…Marvel Sucks

In today’s edition of ‘parents just don’t understand’, the legend Francis Coppola came out of his vineyard to proactively agree with co-legend Martin Scorsese who stated that Marvel films are “not cinema.” Coppola continued by stating that, yes indeed, Marvel films are absolute trash, and shouldn’t be considered cinema.

“Martin was kind when he said it’s not cinema. He didn’t say it’s despicable, which I just say it is,” Coppola said.

That statement is pretty harsh, but at the same time, arguably fair criticism if you’re a “REAL cinema is only in the Criterion bin’ kind of cine-file.

Over the weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy director and part-time ‘old man wrangler’ James Gunn took to Instagram to give an even-handed response that defended the MCU and said it’s okay for them to feel like that.

“Many of our grandfathers thought all gangster movies were the same, often calling them ‘despicable’,” wrote Gunn. “Some of our great grandfathers thought the same of westerns and believed the films of John Ford, Sam Peckinpah, and Sergio Leone were all exactly the same.”

Why’s there gotta be this beef between Marvel movies and legend auteurs? Can’t we all just get along? Are Marvel movies regurgitated trash? Or do they bring the people out, thus keeping the cinema alive? What are your thoughts?

✍🏾Issa Rae Launches New Label With Atlantic Records

“Insecure’ creator, showrunner and mogul-in-the-making Issa Rae, has launched a new joint venture with Atlantic Records. The labels first release includes the single "Kinda Love" by Raedio's flagship artist TeaMarrr.

If you’ve ever watched Insecure it’s been a staple for people to fill up their playlists with the music cuts on the series. They’ve debuted singles that have helped fuel tons of indie and LA artists such as  SZA, Saweetie, Lucky Daye and Jazmine Sullivan among others.

"Music has always been an essential part of every project I do and working with emerging talent is a personal passion,” said Rae. “Raedio allows me to continue that work within the music industry and audio entertainment space. The Atlantic Records team are innovators in terms of shifting and shaping culture. I'm excited to join forces with them to discover new artists.”

This is the beginning of audio domination from Issa and Co.

If you’ve ever wanted to make a screenplay, novel, or anything you’ve written pop off the page. It’s a helpful tip to have actors record it so you can hear how the dialogue flows.

✍🏿 Netflix Stumble But Doesn't Fall

Kurt Sutter OUT. Doctor Strange Update

✍🏻 Writer’s Quotes to Live By

“I'm a guy desperately in need of buffers. I have big feelings, big reactions, big emotions. All the things that serve me as an artist, but challenge me as a socially-responsible human being.”

 Kurt Sutter

✍🏾Kurt Sutter Out of the ‘Mayans M.C.’ Club

Sons of Anarchy genius, Kurt Sutter is riding on the fumes of his spinoff Mayans M.C. is OUT with the Disney mouse. Kury was fired from his executive producer post on the FX series Mayans M.C. after several complaints were submitted from cast and crew against Kurt. In the claims it’s stated that he created a “climate of hostility, favoritism and enabled a set where no one felt safe or appreciated.”

  • Kurt blames his struggle with what he deems censorship from Disney since the acquisition of 20th Century Fox TV/Fox 21 TV Studios acquisition.

“I’ve felt the creative scrutiny of Disney from day one,” he writes (read the full letter below). “Notes on scripts and cuts have been heavy handed. Demanding a level of dumbing-down story and inane PC restraints like I’ve never experienced before. I genuinely feared for the creative future of the storytelling. So I pushed back. Hard.”

Disney censorship is a topic that has been stated by tons of creatives before, but in Kurt’s case he is known as a man who will fight in the public.

This is not a great thing to be accused of, especially in this day and age of ‘cancel culture.’ We’ll see how this washes out, but for now I can’t see a way that Kurt doesn’t sign an exclusive deal with a streaming network, hoping to land the next “Sons of Anarchy.”

✍️ Jade Bartlett set to pen ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

This is breaking news as screenwriter Jade Bartlett is set to write “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” for Marvel studios. Details of the film are still under wraps, but during the Marvel presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said the “Doctor Strange” sequel will be “the first scary MCU film.” But, Feige joked “It’s gonna be PG-13 and you’re going to like it!”

  • Bartlett’s script “Miller’s Girl” was voted to the 2016 Black List of Hollywood’s best-unproduced screenplays and was optioned by Good Universe for Bartlett to direct and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey banner to produce.

Bartlett is represented by UTA, Heroes and Villains Entertainment and attorney Matthew Wallerstein. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” will be released on May 7, 2021.

✍🏻 Netflix’s Earnings Hold…For Now

Netflix the king of the streaming wars, holds the throne in which everyone(Disney, Apple+, HBO Max) is coming for, announced their Q3 Earnings for last quarter, and two huge ideas were gleamed.

  • International growth will be vital for Netflix

  • Fans are fickle with interest

Let’s dive in:

Some of Netflix’s biggest hits aren’t even in English, but are driving subscribers growth through the roof. They’re banking on these international gems to continue their engine growth that’s been feeding this streaming machine. Revealed is a majority of tsubscriberrbr growth has come internationally only this last quarter.

  • Sheridan noted the second season of “Sacred Games” in India and the third season of “La Casa de Pael” in Spain, both returning shows during Q3, spurred increased interest for Netflix abroad.

QUICK SUMMARY OF Q2: The domestic hits were mixed, but the fans attention held.

  • “Stranger Things” was a slam dunk when Season 3 set a company record by getting streamed by 40 million accounts in the three days following its early July return.

  • “Mindhunter” showed “increased interest” from fans and

  • “Orange Is the New Black” enjoyed a relative boost to prior seasons, while the latest season of

  • “13 Reasons Why” nosedived in the ratings as fans figured out the third season was “creatively unnecessary”, and stopped feverishly watching as a result.

Netflix is hoping this quarter of hits will help retain Netflix users from jumping ship to the Apple+, Disney sharks that are all circling the water.

Gemini Man Fail. Merger Fever Alive

Don't Worry if I Write Rhymes..I Write Checks!

✍️ Writer’s Quotes to Live By

“I always had a repulsive need to be something more than human. I felt very puny as a human. I thought, “F**k that. I want to be a superhuman.”

— David Bowie

BOX OFFICE RECAP: Joker' laughing all the way to the bank with a crazy amount of $55M it’s second week out; 'Addams Family' Buries 'Gemini Man' alive.

The common complaint of Gemini Man, seems to be the extreme and overuse of CGI throughout… but the lack of strong storytelling is palpable. This film seems to be a rare stumble for the supernova that IS Will Smith, but as most of us can all agree, we can’t wait to see what Smith has up his creative sleeves next.

  1. Joker (2019) $55M

  2. The Addams Family (2019) $30M

  3. Gemini Man $20M

Can’t Write A Hit Song? Just Buy One!

Why are songwriters cashing out on their royalties? This is a question I’ve seriously wondered. Why not keep the royalties and eat off of them into perpetuity? Because no one has patience to wait for the residual checks and also, because the upfront money is just too good to say no to… at least that’s what the IPO owner Merck Mercuriadis of the publicly traded Hipgnosis Songs is hoping when he makes an offer.

Mercuriadis’ primary effort has been amassing a huge monetary fund to acquire the catalogs of hit-making producers, songwriters and artists.

IN A NUTSHELL: Hit songs are things that will consistently make money… forever.

Merck and Co. are banking that if they acquire enough royalties of No. 1 hits and albums they will see their return from the investment over the long haul. They’re buying rights and catalogs from some of the best in todays music era. The Chainsmokers, Benny Blanco, Poo Bear the songwriter (Chris Brown, Justin Bieber ) , Teddy Geiger (Shawn Mendes), Johnta Austin (Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige), and Tricky Stewart (Rihanna, Beyonce) are just a few of the rights which have been acquired by Hipgnosis.

So the lesson to be learned here kids is; if you can’t write a hit song… just buy it.

Digital Media Cannibalizing Itself?

Quick Rundown:

Freelance writers and content creators have been on thin ice over the last month as 3 huge shifting deals have closed, signaling that digital media isn’t as sustainable as we once thought.

  • Vox Media acquired New York Magazine parent company New York Media in a $105 million all-stock deal.

  • Vice Media acquired Refinery29 for $400 million,

  • Group Nine Media acquired PopSugar in a stock deal that valued the female-focused celebrity and lifestyle publisher at more than $300 million.

Now the $100 million question is, what does all that mean for writers? Succinctly, it means some people are probably about to get fired as Sports Illustrated (New York Magazine’s Catalog) writers staff is being shaven down a bit as the company goes through a restructuring post-acquisition.

The thing that holds value in these deals aren’t the writer’s per se, but the platform the writers’ words are building. One idea that can be gleaned from these deals (that are all closing at an alarming rate), is that the writer is expendable at all times. It’s the brand names that are struggling to survive in this russian roulette game for attention brands like BuzzFeed, Vice, Refinery29, and Vox are all playing.

*This is a dirty game of merger fever, and there’s no amount of Robitussin that can make this sickness subside.

China Throw Dem 🤑 Dollas

Sundance Institute Kicking Off!

✍️ Writer’s Quotes to Live By

“Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind, is written large in his works.”

Virginia Woolf

✍️ All Quiet on the Hong Kong Front???!!!

This past week China has gone to war with the NBA after the Houston Rockets General Manager, Darryl Morey tweeted a pro “Hong Kong” supporting the demonstrators with the continent on the brink of a civil war.

The tweet from Morey stated “Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong”

In retaliation to the NBA-affiliated faux-paux, Chinese-mega-juggernaut Tencent have canceled plans to stream any NBA games to their 500 million users, as of this moment.

South Park also got the Chinese ban last week, after airing their 299th episode titled “Band in China.” The episode mocked American' corporations and their willingness to “bend the knee” for success in Chinese.

The series “South Park” has now been scrubbed from all Chinese streaming services, social media sites, including Weibo and Baidu, fan sites and discussion pages, according to reports.

✍️ Are TV Creators Really GETTING PAID???

Peter Morgan, the brain child behind Netflix’s mega hit The Crown, has signed an overall creator deal valued in the eight-figure range. The deal will encompass film and television, as well as a two season renewal for “The Crown,” bringing the series total to six. I know what you’re thinking, so what, another writer got a Brinks truck full of money! Big Whoop! Everyone from our proverbial Queen Shonda Rhimes, to JJ Abrams, Matt and Ross Duffer, and even David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and not to forget Phoebe Waller-Bridge or Ryan Murphy… they have all signed these deals — at price points ranging from $20 million up to $500 million. My question is, do you think the deals will pay off for these streamers?

The formula is very simple for these corporations… content = attention and attention in society today = MONEY! Do you think we’re in the Golden Era of the writer’s age? Do you think that this a day we’ll look back on and say, ”Man, we writers sure had it good.” What are your thoughts on these mega-blockbuster series creator deals? Are they a cap on the talents’ creativity, or simply a way to not own your content years from now after the series is running in syndication?

I’m dying to hear your thoughts.
